It used to work fine in my friends' computers even when it was being weird in mine, but I just tried it in my friend's now (I was freaked out because Running XP, SP2, when I plugged in, the drive was recognised, however it told me that I needed a hi-speed port. It's a sole card reader.2. It does show up when I go to "Safely Remove Hardware." So why doesn't it appear as a usable drive? when plug in the usb hdd, driver installed correctly and the drive appears in device manager and my computer, but the there's nothing inside the drive when double cliks it ...

First thing, try different motherboards with no other hard drives attached ( minimum needed), see if any other motherboard can read the correct size.

The only issue would be whether the drive is still in warranty and Maxtor will replace it but this guarantees loss of data 100% of the time. I hope that this solution works for the rest of you!
